Northwood Engine Company 2 was established in 1926. It was formed to serve the Northern end of Lake Hopatcong being that no other Fire Companies existed in that area to serve the needs of the many summer residents. The Fire Company was started by members of the Northwood Community Association. The first firehouse was a garage donated by Charles Thompson a founding member of Northwood Engine Co. 2. Along with Hopatcong Fire Company 1, the members of NEC2 provided fire suppression services to the entire borough of Hopatcong and aided surrounding towns such as Jefferson who would not have a fire company established until 1946.
The original firehouse would be built on the location where the donated garage once stood as NEC2's membership and equipment expanded both in size and technologically. The first piece of Apparatus for the company was a REO Chemical engine previously used by Hopatcong Company 1. Following this an Ahrens Fox Model V would serve Northwood Engine Company for nearly thirty years as its primary piece of apparatus. Other supplemental firefighting apparatus would be a 1946 CJ-2A Jeep, An WWII communications barge that was converted to a fire boat, a WWII Duece and a half with a water tank.
Serving the area of town known as the Actors Colony many of the members of NEC2 rubbed elbows with the likes of, Lou Costello and Bud Abbot, Bert Lahr (The Cowardly Lion), Milton Berle, and others from golden age of entertainment. Primarily consisting of Summer Cottages and Camps, the Northwood Community had no fire hydrants so members would utilize the lake to draw water from and extinguish any fires that arose. (As they still due today).
As time went on and membership and equipment size grew, So did the building housing NEC2. First the buildings roof was raised to accommodate the next generation of NEC2 firefighting apparatus, a 1969 Seagrave FWD Engine. And eventually in 1983 due to the overwhelming growth of necessary equipment, Northwood Engine Company relocated to its current location at Maxim Drive and Indian Trail.
For over 80 years Northwood Engine Company has served the Borough of Hopatcong proudly and its members look forward to continuing to serve. |
